18th century Neo-Classical Italian carved, painted and gilt panel
Anonymous
ca. 1790; Italy
Wood panel and plaster, painted, gilt and lacquered
Approximate size: 118.5 x 82.5 x 5 cm
The present panel is probably of late 18th century origin, inspired by the vogue for antiquity during the neo-classical era. The lacquered cream-toned painted ground contrasts gracefully against the elaborate heightened and gilded plaster low-relief vegetable motifs and central amphora-inspired urn.
Patterns like the present composition were celebrated throughout Europe, popularized by designs like those invented and published by Michael Angelo Pergolesi during the last quarter of the 18th century.
Condition: some stress cracks present with minor losses and chips to surface paint. Restorative in-painting around cracks along surface. Reverse features a later framed reinforcement for structural stability and preservation as well as for proper suspension on a wall. Altogether, condition is commensurate with its age.
